Willa J. “Bill” Board (nee Shy), 96, of Lorain, died Saturday January 22, 2022 in the emergency room at University Hospital Elyria Medical Center after a short illness.

She was born July 29, 1925 in Prichard, West Virginia and had resided most of her life in Lorain.

Willa was one of the first volunteers at Lorain Community Hospital,  serving on the board of volunteers for over 25 years, helping with the “Follies” and Lakeland Womens Auxiliary.

She was a member of Amherst Foursquare Gospel Church and was active in the church cooking and baking and helping with church camps.

Willa enjoyed traveling and had visited France, Germany, England and Hawaii.  On many trips, she went with her sisters.  She enjoyed spending time with her family in Ohio and West Virginia.  She was an excellent cook and baker and was always happy to feed her family and friends.  Willa had also served as her children’s school PTO president for many years.

She is survived by her children: Willa Szafran and Vernon Board Jr, both of Lorain, son-in-law General Josue Robles Jr (Patty) of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren: Melissa Robles (Justine) of New Hampshire, Ryan Szafran (Molly) of Grafton & Christopher Szafran of Lorain; great grandchildren: Andrew, Jeremy & Scarlet Szafran all of Grafton; step great grandchildren Elsie Benton and Fiona; sisters: Olive Smith (Ronald) of Kenova, West Virginia and Pansy Whaley of Southpoint, Ohio and brothers: Delbert “Deb” Shy and Vernon Shy, both of Prichard, West Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 76 years Vernon V. Board Sr in 2018, daughters Lucy Board and Linda Robles, grandson Joseph A. Robles, parents Delbert & Sadie Shy (nee Gilkerson), brothers Joseph, Willard “Wick” and Toby Shy and sisters Mona Cole and Berdenia “Dean” Findley.

Funeral Schedule

The family will receive friends Wednesday January 26, 2022 from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Lorain.  The family asks that all attendees wear masks.   Funeral services will be held Thursday January 27, 2022 at 10:00 am in the funeral chapel.  The Rev Marvin Osborne, pastor of First Baptist Church in Birmingham will preside.  Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township.
