Phyllis Jean Shunka (nee Dario), 87, of Lorain, died Tuesday December 28, 2021 at Main Street Care Center in Avon Lake after a six-month illness.

She was born November 22, 1934 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain resident.

Phyllis graduated from Lorain High School in 1953 and went on to work as a secretary at American Shipbuilding, Fruehauf Trailer Company and Lake Erie Electric.  When her children were grown, she started a travel company, Great Escapes Tours. She and her daughter Lisa ran the company for over 30 years, taking passengers all over the United States, Canada and Europe.

Prior to her years of traveling, she enjoyed sewing, reading, watching Alfred Hitchcock films and entertaining friends and relatives.

She was a member of St Peter Parish in Lorain and a founding member of the St Francis of Assisi Mission Group.  She was a long-time member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority which raised money for local community charities and volunteered on service projects in the community.  Along with her sorority sisters, she was a volunteer at the Lorain Palace Theater for many years.  She also volunteered at the Riviera Swim Club where she raised money for the booster club to support the swim teams and provide trophies during swim meets.

She is survived by her children Lisa Ann Shunka (Denise Porter) of Lorain and Rick Shunka (Mika) of San Diego, California, granddaughter Anela Sakamoto of San Diego, California, brother Nicholas Daddario of Flushing, Michigan, sister-in-law Sandra Zaborniak of Elyria and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Vincent Shunka in 2000, parents Nicholas & Josephine Dario (nee Sackett) and sister Dora Witten.
