Gluvna Shimo Hromada

Ernest Dugovich, age 92, of Lorain, passed away on Tuesday January 9, 2018 in the emergency room at Mercy Regional Medical Center. He was born on March 11, 1925 in Lorain and remained a life-long resident of the city. Ernie graduated from Lorain High School as a member of the Class of 1943-A.

Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy where he fulfilled duty assignments as an Electrician’s Mate 3rd Class stationed in Okinawa in the Pacific Theater. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with one star, the American Area Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Dugovich was a life member of Amvets Post # 47.

Ernie was employed as a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service from 1957 until the time of his retirement in 1987. He had previously been employed as a metallurgical observer for the United States Steel Corporation.

Highly regarded as a gentle man who never uttered an unkind word about anybody, he was a long-time parishioner of the former St. Michael Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Lorain and was currently attending St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Lorain Historical Society and a former member of both the Lorain Slovenian Club, and the Knights of Columbus.

Ernie developed a fondness for Ragtime music while once vacationing in New Orleans, He subsequently enjoyed traveling with his wife to Ragtime festivals throughout the United States, Canada, and even once to Hungary.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years whom he married on November 1, 1952 Joyce (nee Sustersic), son John (Christine) Dugovich of Elyria, and daughter Jayne Pogorelc residing in Florida.  He also leaves grandchildren Matthew (Julie) Pogorelc of Nashville, Tennessee, Deanna Pogorelc of Denver, Colorado, Ben (Bonnie) Pogorelc of Bloomington, Indiana, Jennifer Dugovich, David Dugovich, Patrick Dugovich, and Anna Dugovich all living  locally, two step grandchildren, one great grandson, and four step great grandchildren, , brother Frank Dugovich (Helen) of Middleburg Heights, and sister Lynne Venable (Phil) of Portland, Oregon.

Ernie was preceded in death by an infant son David Bryan Dugovich in September of 1958, by his father Michael Dugovich, mother Anne (nee Kusnyir) Dugovich, aunt and step-mother Maria Kusnyir Dugovich, brothers William, Nick, and Elmer Dugovich, and sisters Elizabeth Horvath, Margaret Novak, Hermaine Spiegel, and Maryann Camera.

Funeral Schedule

Funeral services were conducted Friday in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Deacon John Slatcoff representing St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township officiated. Burial followed in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township where military honors were conducted by Amvets Post # 32 of Elyria.
